The Lord doesn’t want us to take our joy from anything that is changing. In our last part we mentioned the instability and inaccuracy of people’s opinion of us. But did you know that God doesn’t even want us to take our joy from manifestations of the Holy Spirit? That may sound strange, but it’s absolutely true.

Do you know why people’s rejection takes such a toll on us sometimes? It’s because many of us trust in people’s opinion of us when they are accepting us. We value their opinion so much when they compliment us. And so, when people reject us or criticize us, we have trained our mind to value a man’s opinion of our worth.

There are a lot of different labels that people can give to what is perceived as the aftermath of something traumatic happening. I believe that the biggest reason why the emotional effects of an event linger with people for years, is because they have yet to be given a solution to that initial problem. They have yet to be given an answer to that initial question. And so, when life hits them with a problem, and to this day they still don’t have a resolution, the emotional effects linger. Thank God, there is an easy solution in Jesus.

I’m sure you’ve heard about “Paul’s thorn in the flesh” that is mentioned in 2 Corinthians 12. Even unbelievers will use the phrase “a thorn in my flesh” or “a thorn in my side” for things that are annoying or irritating. But this passage of scripture has been so terribly misinterpreted, and God has been accused of some atrocities that He never committed because of it.

We’re told that the bad feeling you get inside after you do something wrong is just the conviction of the Holy Spirit trying to steer you right. But that feeling doesn’t come from the Holy Spirit at all. It comes from your conscience! The church has mixed up the Holy Spirit with their conscience for a very long time.

When Christians feel rotten inside after they sin, if they don’t call it the conviction of the Holy Spirit (which is incorrect), they will at least feel that it is a sign of a healthy conscience. After all, if we do something wrong, shouldn’t we feel grief and hurt as a repercussion?

In the book of Numbers, the people of Israel were bitten by serpents. So, God commanded Moses to make a brass serpent on a pole. And when the people looked upon that serpent on a pole, they lived, being healed from their serpent bite. In John chapter 3, Jesus says that the serpent on that pole represented Him on the cross. But why is Jesus represented as a serpent? Well, there is much deeper symbolism here, but let’s put it plainly:

In the Bible, Paul advises Timothy to “prove” leaders, before giving them a position within the church (1 Timothy 3:10). This just means that we should test people to make sure they agree with us and that they’re bearing the right fruit before giving them a position of leadership within the church. We’ve been talking about unity in the faith, when it comes to romantic relationships, but what if you love each other? What if you get along great? What if you can speak about Jesus with this person and they receive it? All these things are not what is important to a unified marriage.

When we don’t believe that we can trust the Lord with something, that’s the time when we take things into our own hands and force an issue. But I assure you, if you desire a marriage relationship, the Lord is ready, willing, and able, through the sacrifice of Jesus, to add someone to you.

These days, most Bible schools end up turning out students that can quote a lot of books, philosophies, methods of Bible interpretation, and “tenants of faith”, but are as confused as ever, because they’re not being taught the simplicity of what Jesus has done for them. We end up getting so caught up in the specific biblical prophecies, principles, and concepts themselves, rather than simply seeing the One they’re pointing to.

We’ve never really liked the word “theology.” For those that don’t know, that would mean “the study of God.” If you get to know your wife, you wouldn’t call it “wife-ology.” Because you have a relationship with her and you’re just getting to know her. When you talk about healing, being empowered to wealth, raising the dead, or the working of any miracle, your average Christian (and even some people that aren’t Christians) will say, “Oh, I certainly believe that God can do all of those things.” But did you know that even the devil and demons believe that God can do all the above? God doesn’t want you to believe that He “can” do these things. God wants you to believe that Jesus provided these things, and that you have the right to these things through Him.

Jesus has provided us healing for sickness (Isaiah 53:5). He has provided resurrection for the dead (John 11:25). He has provided everlasting strength for weakness and corruption (Isaiah 40:31). And because Jesus has provided a full solution to every single problem you could possibly encounter, there’s no longer any such thing as permanent or lifelong issues. No such thing.

What we believe affects our emotions. If we believe that our home is far off from us, as if it’s something we will attain years from now, it gives us a sort of bittersweet ache, and a longing in our hearts for something better. That is the last thing that a born-again believer, carrying Heaven inside of them, should feel.
