When someone falls into sin, is sick, or even dies, to most people, their last reaction would be celebration. But I want to show you that celebration is always appropriate, especially in those times.
When someone is sick, even most Christians take a very somber posture toward it. When someone falls into sin, there is a similar reaction. And when someone dies, we hold special services for people to mourn a loss. Now, I’m not saying any of those things are good. I’m not saying we should approve of any of it. But I am saying that celebration is the proper reaction to all of it. Let me explain.
Some people reading this may think, “I would never celebrate if I got news that a loved one was sick.” But that’s not actually true. Anyone (even an unbeliever) with a loved one who’s sick, would celebrate under certain conditions.
Imagine this: A loved one is fatally sick. They’re lying on a hospital bed and the doctor comes out to you. He says, “I don’t just have good news for you. I have a great news. There is a breakthrough drug that has just been approved. It has a 100% success rate. We’ve just given it to your loved one and they will be out of this hospital bed, better than before, in just three days.” Anyone who truly loves that person would start to celebrate. Most people would probably break down in tears of joy.
Now, how could we say that? After all, your loved one is still sick! How could you possibly be celebrating at a time like this? The answer is simple. You’re not rejoicing because your loved one is sick. You are celebrating because you just found the cure! And that is exactly why God says to “Rejoice in the Lord always. And again, I say Rejoice (Philippians 4:4).”
This is why Jesus went to a funeral for a little girl and was baffled at the people who were mourning there. He actually asked them, “Why make this commotion and weep? (Mark 5:39)” as if it didn’t make sense to Him. Was Jesus being inconsiderate? After all, “weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15).” So why didn’t Jesus join the mourners at the funeral? Why, instead, did He drive them all out of the house? Was Jesus happy that the little girl was dead? No, He was happy because He had the cure! Once you know you have the cure, why join the mourners? It stops making sense. The only thing Jesus ever wept over was unbelief, because when people don’t believe the cure, that’s the only thing that stops them from using it (see more here)!
When you sin, when you hit financial trouble, when you get a flat tire — it doesn’t matter — celebration and rejoicing is always in order. That is, if you know Jesus. Why? Because you found the cure! You’re not rejoicing because of the problem. You’re rejoicing because of the solution! You’re not rejoicing because of the bad thing that happened. You’re rejoicing because it’s been finished at the cross!
The thing is, rejoicing and celebration doesn’t make sense to people who don’t realize the cure. And sure, that’s consistent logic. If there wasn’t a cure for sickness in Jesus, I’d be upset too. If there wasn’t life for the dead, I’d be crying with you. If there wasn’t a great High Priest who atoned for my sin, I’d feel condemned also. The thing is, there is a solution to those problems. There is no such universe where those problems are unfixed. In fact, for born again believers, that solution lives right on the inside of you.
Don’t mistake what I’m saying. We don’t approve of sin. Sin is unprofitable and destructive behavior. We don’t approve of sickness. It’s the curse from Adam. The same goes for death. But it’s because these things are evil that Jesus went to the cross and fixed them! We do not live in a world where these things haven’t been overcome. To live with a notion that these things need to be fixed is to not live in reality. It’s a dream. It’s a fairytale to think that these things still need to be solved.
Adam brought two problems into the world — sin and death. Jesus came for one purpose — to die for our sins — problems solved. Now, we don’t need to be asking God to fix our problems. We need to be asking Him for wisdom to see how He’s already fixed them through the cross. Jesus already did it. The solution is already inside of us by His Spirit. Now, our eyes simply need to be enlightened to this great inheritance that’s already in the Saints. You hold the answer. You found the cure! The moment you truly realize that is the moment you’ll start celebrating and won’t stop.
If you get bad news and realize Jesus in that moment, you’ll rather laugh yourself silly than shed a tear (Psalms 112:7), because you see something human eyes can’t see. You’ve got the inside scoop! The cure is here and you have special, unrestricted access through Jesus.
Even when you don’t feel it, start celebrating and praising God first! Don’t worry about the feelings. The feelings will come soon enough once you get your head screwed on straight through giving thanks (Isaiah 26:3)!
Should we be purposefully obnoxious to other people? No. Should we ever stop celebrating? Never. And if that’s obnoxious to someone that’s not your fault. You just discovered the true Jesus! And He makes us so happy!
