In the book of Numbers, the people of Israel were bitten by serpents. So, God commanded Moses to make a brass serpent on a pole. And when the people looked upon that serpent on a pole, they lived, being healed from their serpent bite. In John chapter 3, Jesus says that the serpent on that pole represented Him on the cross. But why is Jesus represented as a serpent? Well, there is much deeper symbolism here, but let’s put it plainly:
The people were bitten by serpents. The serpents were what was ailing the people. The serpents were what was hurting the people. And so, everything that was hurting and destroying the people, God represented on that pole, because Jesus became everything that was hurting and destroying us.
The people were hurting. The people were going through something. And when they looked up, they saw everything that was hurting them, and everything that they were going through, hanging on a pole. And everything that has ever hurt you, and everything that you could ever go through, God hung on a pole 2,000 years ago for you. Jesus became everything that could hurt you and everything that you could ever go through.
Jesus did that for you, but it’s not good enough to just throw out a prayer to God for help. You need to see how these things were taken for you, upon Jesus, at the cross. You need to see how everything you wanted to escape from, and everything that you didn’t want to be any more, Jesus became for you at the cross!
Jesus became your sin. And Jesus became all your destructions. Jesus took all these things upon His own flesh at the cross, and the Father nailed it there to that pole. In fact, the word “cross” in the New Testament is actually the word “pole or stake.”
Just as those people saw everything that was hurting them, hanging on that pole, those who realize that Jesus became everything that could hurt us, at the cross, they too will experience freedom from those things! They too will live! They too will thrive! Everyone who believes what Jesus became for them at the cross… lives!
John 3:14-15 (NKJV) And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
If you will set your mind on everything Jesus became for you at the cross, you will soon realize… This must mean you’re free now. Because whatever you’re going through, God already nailed to the cross, in the body of His Son.
So why is Jesus represented as a serpent? Because everything that was hurting you, everything that was holding you down, everything that was ailing you, Jesus became on that pole!
