When a believer goes through trouble, your average Christian is going to tell them to keep believing the Lord for the victory! “The battle is the Lord’s! Keep believing until you overcome your giant!” But I think they’re reading an old newspaper, because victory happened a long time ago and there’s nothing left to overcome.
Don’t get me wrong, no Christian is going to argue with you if you say that Jesus already overcame, but we simultaneously state that God will give us the victory as we believe! We act like Jesus is currently fighting our battles and that we are currently overcoming things in the world as we experience them. I think some of that comes from a misunderstanding of this verse.
1 John 5:4 (NKJV) For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
This verse is not saying that as a Christian believes more, they become more and more victorious. This is referring to the first moment that you put faith in Jesus. At that point, you received the victory that Jesus won for you at the cross 2,000 years ago. When you first believe in Jesus, you receive all the victory, all at once — not in drips and drabs as you meet trouble. You received all the victory when you first believed… All the victory that Jesus already won at the cross!
You see, Jesus already overcame the world and everything in it. But what does that mean? That means that Jesus took all the bad stuff of this world on Himself at the cross, so you wouldn’t have to go through it anymore. Then He gave you the solution to all of it to live inside of you, in the form of His Spirit.
John 16:33 (NKJV) These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
For everyone that is a part of the world (which was applicable to His disciples at the time), Jesus said that you will experience tribulation, but for those that are in Christ, we now have peace from all the tribulation in this world, because Jesus overcame it by bearing it for us on the cross!
I understand that you may be experiencing a problem. God understands what you’re going through, but you simply don’t need victory, and you don’t need to overcome anything. You need to believe in the champion that already overcame that thing for you.
What a beautiful thing it is to know that Jesus overcame literally everything in this world. Your average Christian thinks that there are certain problems in this world that we must go through, that there are troubles in this world that we have to face. Nothing could be further from the truth. If Jesus bore all the evil of this world on Himself (namely, sin and death), why in the world do you think you have to bear it again? When Jesus said, “It is finished” He was talking about all the trouble you could possibly go through.
He loves you a whole lot. He loves you so much. He would rather take all the evil, and hurt, and suffering of this world upon Himself, than to see you go through it even for a minute. That wasn’t His suffering at the cross. That was yours. That wasn’t His pain at the cross. That was yours. It wasn’t His trouble at the cross. That was yours.
There isn’t a single negative thing in this world that He missed. He took it all for you. He overcame it all for you. And if He overcame everything in this world, then you are certainly not bound to anything in it anymore. You are not a slave to the things of this world like suffering, hardships, and tribulations as if you were a part of it. You are free, and you are free for good (John 8:36).
Stop believing the Lord for victory. Stop believing the Lord to overcome something. Start believing that a champion already beat all your former problems in this world, even things you could be feeling right now. Because your champion loved you so much to beat everything for you, you’ve already got the victory over everything living inside of you! Believe it, and you will see it manifest!
You didn’t fight, but because Jesus fought all your tribulations and troubles, that has made you more than a conqueror over everything in this world — because He loved you so much! Do you understand that? He loved you so much at the cross you are now free. You are now healed. You are now more than a conqueror over that thing. He loved you so much!
Romans 8:37 (NKJV) Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
It’s not time to grit your teeth, dig your heels in, and get ready for a fight over that problem. To be frank, it’s time for a victory dance. It’s time for the victory lap. It’s time to rejoice and simply tell Jesus, “Thank you so much for beating it all for me. I believe you.” And that is quite enough.
