FOUNDATIONS OF THE EARTH
Definition:
A term used for the underworld (also see “The Sea/The Deep”)
Scripture:
- Knowing that “the Sea” is a term that can be used for the underworld (see “the Sea”), David says that the earth was founded upon the seas, showing the underworld to be the foundation of the earth.
Psalms 24:1-2 (NKJV) A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. 2 For He has founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the waters.
Psalms 18:15 (KJV) Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.
- Jonah, as a symbol of Jesus, was thrown into the sea (representing Jesus’ descent to the underworld, see “the Sea”) for three days and three nights. Afterwards, being vomited upon dry land (representing the resurrection again to the earth above). Jonah prophesies as Jesus, as if in hell at the time. He refers to hell (the sea) as the bottom or the base of the mountains (base of the heavens, see “Mountain/Hill”). This is referring to hell, not only as the base and foundation of the earth, but seemingly also the “base of the heavens,” as if the lowest part of the spiritual realm.
Jonah 2:2-6 (KJV) And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. 3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas… Verse 6) I went down to the bottoms [or base] of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever…
