Definition:

Similar or the same as “Dark.” Anything that makes things not visible, hidden.

Scripture:

  • A “mist” is used together with “darkness” and interchangeable with “not seeing.”

Acts 13:11 (KJV) And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

  • A cloud is said to “cover,” particularly light, making things dark.

Ezekiel 32:7 (KJV) And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.

  • A cloud is said to be used to “cover” Mount Sinai.

Isaiah 25:5 (KJV) Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; even the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.

  • The blotting out (wiping away the remembrance) of sins is likened to a thick cloud. As in, not being able to see them anymore.

Isaiah 44:22 (KJV) I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

  • To represent the fact that the Holy Spirit dwells unseen, inside of the church, the glory of the Lord filled the temple in a cloud. Solomon also uses the word cloud synonymous with darkness. Shortly after this, the glory of the Lord manifested upon the temple, representing the Spirit’s manifestation through us, but this time the cloud is not mentioned, as the glory was now visible.

2 Chronicles 5:14-6:1 (KJV) So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God. 6:1 Then said Solomon, The LORD hath said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.

2 Chronicles 7:3 (KJV) And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement…
