Scripture
- Knowing that “the Sea” can be used for the underworld (hell, see “The Sea”), Jonah refers to being in the “belly” of hell, but then again as in the “midst” of the seas, showing that when he says “belly” he is referring to the midst, the middle.

- Jesus referred to the “belly” of the great fish as being a symbol of the “heart” of the earth, thus using them interchangeably.
Matthew 12:40 (NKJV) For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
- Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as living in “our belly,” but then coming “out,” implying that the belly is inward. Not only this, but the Spirit is also said to live in our hearts, referring to the residence of the Spirit as both in our belly and in our hearts.
