We live in a world full of “you touch the stove, you burn your hand,” “you fall down, you skin your knee,” “everybody has problems,” “nobody knows everything,” “nobody’s perfect,” “everybody dies.” These things are held as more than just normal in this world. These things are held as common sense. But if these things are also normal to the church, then in this life, what’s the point of being a new creation? Are we just a version of the world with better morals?

Well, it’s not what you believe about funerals. It’s what you believe about death. If it’s permanent, then a memorial service makes sense. If they can be back in the next few minutes, that changes things quite a bit.

It’s funny, we will pray for the sick sometimes, as believers, but the second someone dies we usually throw up our hands and think, “Well, we tried.” But there’s no difference between raising the dead and healing the sick. One is not harder than the other. They’re both things Jesus provided for, both situations that need life, and both things that we can pray for just the same.
