The Old Testament was people trying to change their lives for God. In the New Testament it’s God that works in us, to change our lives for us! When you learn about this rest, it is an amazing relief, but some may have some misconceptions on how this works.

Many years ago, I started learning about how forgiven and righteous I was through Jesus. It was an amazing revelation. I finally felt clean and presentable before the Lord. Whenever I did something wrong, I would remember how righteous the Lord had made me. While that was an unspeakable consolation to me, something was missing, and I didn’t know what it was.

If you were to read Romans 5-7 (and a bit of chapter 8) you would find words like “reign, slave, dominion, captivity, and law (as in a governing authority).” There are a lot of words describing a slave/master relationship. That’s because, before we knew Jesus, we were slaves to sin and death. Those were the two things that came through Adam. Likewise, we now have a new slavery to righteousness and life – the opposite of what Adam enslaved us to. Romans 5 calls it “righteousness and grace.”

There is a term in the church today — “on fire for God.” Ultimately, this is a term that is used for someone when they are extremely enthusiastic about God; often accompanied by a lot of very fast and visible results. While I’m not trying to dissuade anyone from being excited about the Lord, mere enthusiasm is not what we should be looking for in a person.
