If you’ve been around the gospel for a while, you know that as believers, we are joint heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). That means that we have everything that Jesus has. But this is more than just His Spirit living in you…

When you hear someone say that you have the “mind of Christ,” for instance, you may assume that this is true, simply because Jesus lives inside of you. But that’s not actually the reason. You may have heard that we have the power that raised Jesus from the dead, and may have assumed that this is true, simply because the Holy Spirit lives inside of us, but it’s more than that. 

We all have a spirit living inside of our bodies, and your spirit has been made to look exactly like Jesus. Your spirit has the same mind that Jesus has. Your spirit thinks, says, and does all the right things just like Jesus does. Your spirit has all the power of God infused into it, just as much as Jesus has.

So, when we say that you have the mind of Christ, or you have the power of God, or you have the righteousness of God, we are not saying that the Holy Spirit is wise, powerful, and righteous, and lives inside of you. That’s true, but we are literally saying that your personal spirit (not speaking about the Holy Spirit) has all these qualities in it. It’s not just the Holy Spirit that has these qualities anymore. You look like the Holy Spirit. You look just like Jesus. These qualities have been duplicated over to your born-again spirit. They’re not simply Jesus’ qualities anymore. There are your qualities now as well!

So, when the Bible says that we have the mind of Christ, it really means it (1 Corinthians 2:16). Your personal spirit has the same mind that Jesus has now (1 John 2:20)! When the Bible says that we’ve been created in righteousness and holiness, it really means it (Ephesians 4:24)! Your spirit thinks, does, and says the right things all the time! All these qualities are no longer unique to the Lord, but have been shared with you! 

Look at this verse which speaks about what the Holy Spirit and our spirit testify:

Romans 8:16 (NKJV) The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God…

Notice that this verse doesn’t simply say that the Holy Spirit bears witness to us that we are children of God. It says that the Holy Spirit bears witness “with our spirit.” This verse is saying that our spirit speaks the exact same thing that the Holy Spirit speaks.

We are perfectly in sync with the Lord. The Holy Spirit has infused our born-again spirit with all His qualities, so much so that when the Holy Spirit feels something, we feel it too. When the Holy Spirit speak something, we speak it too. When the Holy Spirit is averse to something, we are also. I’m not saying you experience all these things in your flesh right now, but your spirit experiences these things 24/7.

The Bible actually says that we are one spirit with Jesus now (1 Corinthians 6:17) But that doesn’t mean that our spirit has melded with the Lord’s to form one person. Romans 8:16 makes that clear. What it does mean though is that we have complete unity and are identical now. 

As a believer, you are currently thinking what God is thinking. You’re currently feeling what God is feeling. You’re currently desiring what God is desiring. And you do whatever God does all the time. This is the reality of the spirit within you.

It’s not enough to say that having the mind of Christ is because the Holy Spirit lives in you. If that’s all we said, it doesn’t communicate the fact that your personal mind is the mind of Christ now. It gives the impression that the Holy Spirit simply has the mind of Christ, and He lives in you. But that’s not telling the whole story. 

If it’s just the Holy Spirit that has this mind, this power, and this righteousness, and He happens to live inside of us, it’s not necessarily a gift that we own for ourselves. It’s sort of like having a neighbor that owns all these things that we can use. But as you can see, it’s not just that your neighbor, the Holy Spirit, possesses these things, but rather He has duplicated all these qualities over to you now. You are now the owner of God’s mind, power, and righteousness.

And as you acknowledge these things, they will certainly manifest physically as well! You’ll start getting thoughts, desires, and actions manifested into your flesh, by the Spirit, just like you already have inside of you! But before you ever see it, it is real. You are experiencing it right now, on the inside. You already think the same, feel the same, speak the same, and do the same as Jesus now. Twinsies!
