All our lives, we are told in the church that we are strangers to this earth. We don’t belong here. We walk as pilgrims in this world. And one day we will be home. But that last part is unfortunately incorrect.
Firstly, you have to know that the term “Holiest,” or sometimes “Holy Place,” (referring to that second room in the tabernacle of Moses) is a symbolic term for Heaven. You can see that here:
Hebrews 9:24 (NKJV) For Christ has not entered the holy places [or the Holiest] made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself…
Hebrews goes on in the next chapter to say that Jesus died to give us access into “the Holiest” (or Heaven). And he doesn’t say you’re going to have access someday after you die. He says that we presently have access to Heaven because Jesus died.
Hebrews 10:19 (NKJV) Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest [aka Heaven] by the blood of Jesus…
Jesus died 2,000 years ago to give us access to Heaven. Why are we waiting to experience Heaven sometime in the future, when our Savior paid the price for us 2,000 years ago? The truth is, your heavenly home isn’t something to long for in the future one day. Your heavenly home is right here inside of you, ready to access whenever you believe it.
Luke 17:20-21 (NKJV) …The kingdom of God does not come with observation [it doesn’t come visibly] nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”
Heaven is our home now. We are citizens of Heaven (Philippians 3:20). And even while we walk as strangers in this world, not belonging to it, we carry home with us wherever we go.
God doesn’t want us longing for a place where we belong, sometime in the future. Why should we long for anything in the future, if our Savior tore His flesh for us 2,000 years ago, giving us access to all of Heaven, the true Holiest place? Instead of a longing for home, we can feel a perfect peace and contentment, knowing that all the good things of our home live inside of us right now.
We have the beauty and sweetness of a place where there is no such thing as death, hurt, or sorrow. It’s right here inside of us. No need to ache for someplace far off. Home sweet home is with you wherever you go, by the Spirit which He has given us.
