God Is Good, All The Time?

Length: 5 minutes

God is good all the time? That’s actually not true; at least not the way that people say it. And I know you are probably curious about this article, but before we go any further, we need to establish some common ground.

  1. Do you believe that Jesus’ death is the ONLY WAY to receive from the Father?
  1. Do you believe that people are undeserving of God’s blessings, in and of themselves?

Hopefully your answer to both those questions was, “Yes!” even though you may think those questions are overly basic.

The truth is, we do not deserve anything from God based on our works. God wanted to save us, God wanted to bless us, and God wanted to give us every good thing that He has, but He couldn’t because we did not deserve it. God is just and He is always just (Rom. 9:14). God CANNOT give good to evil people. That’s a fact (Rom. 8:30). And that’s why God had to send Jesus!

Because we did not deserve it of ourselves, Jesus came and provided every good thing that God wanted to give us. We cannot receive STRAIGHT from God, but now we can receive through our mediator, Jesus! Jesus is the only way for God to get good things to undeserving people.

Still with me so far? Hopefully, because this is basic Christianity. It would be blasphemy for a person to believe that they can receive straight from God, apart from the provision of Jesus at the cross. Jesus is our ONLY WAY to receive from God. There is no other way! Which brings us to this point: How could God be providing good to you “all the time,” if Jesus’ death is the only way for God to provide good to humanity?

The pastor yells “God is good! “And the whole church says “all the time! “Now I understand, Gods’ nature is good all the time. True! God is full of goodness all the time. But God is not providing that goodness to us all the time!

God provided all His goodness to the world ONE time. How could we disagree with that? If Jesus’ death is the only way to receive from God, then that means that God’s goodness was provided to humanity ONE TIME at the cross, not all the time.

Of course, we can receive of Gods goodness all the time, but it was paid for ONE time. We can walk in the goodness and mercy of God every day, according to our faith, but that goodness and mercy was only provided and paid for ONE time.

Here’s how it works: Jesus went to the cross and paid the price for us to receive every good thing from God (Ephesians 1:3). As people believe in that one work of Jesus, they get to receive the good that Jesus provided 2,000 years ago. It’s a simple as that.

Just because you receive of God’s goodness every day, by faith, does not mean that God is providing that goodness to you every day. God provided goodness one time at the cross, through Jesus. As we believe, we get to receive from what was ALREADY paid for.

Jesus is the only way through which God can provide good to humanity. That’s a fact. All men must receive ONLY through Jesus. And if that’s true, then God is DONE providing good to humanity, because Jesus is DONE dying!

You can’t say that “Jesus is the only way” and still say that God is providing good to people “all the time,” because Jesus is not dying “all the time.”

Hebrews 7:27 (NKJV) …[Jesus] does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices… for this He did once for all

You may not agree with this, but I suspect that most people harden their hearts against articles like this merely because they know that they have said “God is good, all the time“, before. But let’s get over that. It’s OK if you’ve said that phrase before if you’re willing to learn the truth. God’s not judging you, God just wants to teach us.

The bottom line is this: If Jesus’ death is the only way to receive, then God is not being good to humanity all the time. He only provided His goodness to humanity ONE time, and that was enough. We get to receive every day of the provision of Jesus, by faith, but that doesn’t mean that God is providing good to us every day. You can receive wisdom today, but God provided that 2,000 years ago. You can receive healing today, but that was also provided 2,000 years ago! Everything the Holy Spirit produces in you and everything you receive today was ALREADY provided [past tense].

1 Peter 2:24 (NKJV) …by whose stripes you WERE [past tense] healed.

When you believe, you are just receiving of a goodness that was demonstrated ONCE, 2,000 years ago. That’s the beauty of what Jesus did: It is finished! And therefore, God’s provision of goodness to the world is DONE! Unless of course you believe that there is a different way for God to get good to humanity? But that would be blasphemy. Jesus is the only way to access God’s goodness.

Romans 5:1-2 (NKJV) …our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access… into this grace…

The truth is, you can’t receive goodness from God unless Jesus’ death provided it! And Jesus is done dying! So that means God is done providing!

The church would be more accurate in saying, “God WAS good, once for all time.“ Now, forever we get to walk in that goodness!

(For some extra verses on this topic, you’ll notice that, even when the Bible speaks about God’s love for us, it MUCH more commonly says God LOVED the world (past tense) than God LOVES the world [1 Jn 4:19, 1 Jn 4:11, Gal. 2:20] . Even the demonstration of God’s love is referred to in the past tense, because God demonstrated all the love and goodness He possibly could to humanity in one day, at the cross [1 Jn 4:9, Rom. 5:8]).
